Final Graduation

The budget for this project was so severely cut, we decided use this as our basis for our proposals. Ads build up from communication itself, posters that were designed by students using a specifically build design generator. And a catalogue that consisted of scanned one-sided a4 pages depicting process, larded with coloured photo's of the graduation projects.

Democracy (more info)
Interactive tool (work in progress)

We live in a democracy. A democracy which almost a third of the population has no faith in. And a country (the Netherlands) where every election period almost half of the people claim they do not have a clue which party to vote for. In their idea the gap between the people and politics is too large.

A democracy means that every few years power is given to a certain amount of people by us, to represent our vote or voice in politics. We do not vote solely for ourselves, but also as part of the collective. Which means our voice will not always be heard, and if it is heard, it almost always means our voice has to compromise with those of others.

And exactly this leads to great frustration during every administration, while it is the very basis of our political system. That not one person, or a small group is in charge, but all of us... every member of society. Claiming politics is not listening to you, in our country, means that apparently your vote is more important than the other. Something that is in conflict with our very own constitution.

Voting on it's own is very complex. Which party fits you? Or has your best interest? It used to be very clear what to vote. If you did not vote according to your social status, you clearly had an ideology to which you turned. Nowadays this is less obvious. Political programmes are more and more aligned. And the clear image of what parties stand for becomes blurred due to media coverage. We all are liberals and in some way socialists. And most importantly... with all that information, we still do not have a clue about the subjects that need decision-making.

Choices are rather made based on outer appearance, a single debate, results of – or critique on – the administration, or even a single quote... than on the fact a party has the same values and ideas you have as a person. The electorate therefore seems inconstant, as do the parties themselves. Sentiment changes faster than the weather. But the needs you have as a citizen change only gradually over time. Voting very social and progressive on one occasion, to vote extremely liberal and conservative on the other is completely illogical.

We have to stop focussing on the panic for electoral growth within parties, and start focussing on what our political view is. Do you believe in the power of the collective, or that of the individual? Are you conservative, or are you up for change? And everything in between. Only after you have set your course, you can choose which party is within that same course.

America's neverending debt (more info)
Visualisation

An experiment on the visual aspects of virtual money. Debt is virtualisation of money by defition, creating possession that is actually not there at all. America's national debt is astonishing large, and growing every minute. Grasping the volume of debt purely by its number is hard, there is no emotion involved.

On the other hand this stack of billion dollar bills creates an almost unreal image, driven by its almost unlimited repetition. Nonetheless, the height of the stack is reality. Live data from zfacts.

Fotofabryk (more info)
Visual identity

Kijken

1) About news. For the past years news and therefore journalism has been under considerable pressure. Both within our society and the field of journalism itself. While the circulation of paid newspapers continues to decline, interest for news in the form of free newspapers and online media increases year after year. So we do feel the need of consuming news, but why? Every day? Do we watch CNN because we are actually involved, affected or interested? Or are we doing this purely to put our own lives in a larger perspective?

News, as a concept, is very interesting. It is information that loses its value at the very moment it is published. Yesterday's news is today's fish and chips. This makes it to some extent interchangeable or even worthless. After all news derives its value from the fact that a subject or development is new or unknown. A fully market-oriented concept where it dissociates itself from the larger whole, namely journalism. "News is the unsual", writes the dutch former Middle-East correspondant Joris Luyendijk in his bestseller book Het zijn net mensen. As news is about the short term, sensation and sentiment. "The news media may not be successful in telling people what to think, but they are stunningly successful in telling them what to think about."

Zijn er ook Nederlanders bij betrokken? is an essay (dutch) about why we are interested in news.

TEDx Amsterdam (more info)
Livestream in Groningen

TED believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So they're continually building a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. TED started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer.

The TEDx program gives communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently.

As is the TEDx Amsterdam event, hosted annually in Amsterdam, but broadcasted throughout multiple cities in the Netherlands. We, as We love it when a plan comes together, also strongly believe in the power of sharing ideas. For the last two years we have organized the TEDx Amsterdam Livestream from Groningen. Yesterday's news is today's fish 'n chips (more info)
Book

This book is called Woensdag 3 juni 2009 and is over 40 cm high, 30 cm wide and almost 15cm thick. The book consists of thumbnails representing every printed daily newspaper in the Netherlands of that specific day. Counting towards 3.4 million newspapers that were printed daily at that point. The repetitive nature of the content, together with the book-defying size of it, result in something that can rather be considered a sculpture than an actual book. The size and weight also heavily contrasts with the volatility of the matter. The book can be discarded at the end of the day, being replaced by Donderdag 4 juni 2009.

This project partly resulted in a nomation for the Klaas Dijkstra Academyprize for design & communications.
